Acts 2:42:And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 20:7a
Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread,
The four table legs of the church meeting are:
- Doctrine
meaning the teaching / sermon - Fellowship
- Breaking of Bread
meaning communion with the Lord Jesus Christ and remembering His sacrifice - Prayer
Mike always says that if you have a table with four legs and you cut off one leg than it will fall as it can’t stand on three legs. It’s the same with the church meeting; if one element is missing it’s not complete.
Some say that they don’t break bread every Sunday because they don’t want it to become “ineffective”! Scripture doesn’t say to do it seldom but “as often as you” do it.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Remembering the Lord Jesus Christ and what He did for us is an important element of what we do on the first day of the week.
How could it become ineffective? How could it become a ritual? How could a follower of Jesus Christ just go through the motions?
The Lord shed His blood for us so that we can be saved! Praise Him; remember Him; and follow His “prescription” – the BLUEPRINT FOR THE CHURCH laid out in the Epistles (letters of instruction) from Romans through Revelation.
More details can be found in the book “THE CHURCH” by Randy Amos.
Here is an excerpt from the back of the book:
“As believers, we are to base our actions and beliefs on the written Word of God—our beliefs as to the gospel we have trusted, who Jesus is, moral absolutes, etc. Why is it, though, that so many feel, when it comes to the church, it suddenly becomes optional how to do it? Why do people believe that man’s modern ideas plus centuries of tradition can be more successful than God’s pattern? If God has revealed truth for the church, why shouldn’t that be obeyed also in simple faith?
Thus this manual will deal with the operation of the church and how a disciple functions within it—according to the authority of the holy Word of God alone.”
We would love to hear your opinion on this subject.

Great post. I think too often and people become complacent about it in terms of examining themselves. Too far apart and people forget. It’s hard to say often we should do it, but I definitely think we need to do it more often than most churches do. And we should take it a little more seriously than just having a snack, as it seems some view it. But as a time to reflect and consider our lives and our relationship with him. Blessings! 🙂

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I totally agree. In preparation for the time of communion with the Lord Jesus Christ we need to examine ourselves. I think it is also some kind of accountability that we exercise and if we do that maybe only twice a year than there is probably way too much to examine. And we open the door to the evil one to come in and distract. Blessings, Elfriede
