WHO IS THE SON OF MAN?

Posted by Elfriede

Jesus Christ being God and the Son of God called Himself Son of Man.

Why did He do that and what does it mean?

The “Son of Man” was a Messianic title pointing to the Messiah who we now know is Jesus Christ. The Jews knew the Old Testament and therefore could relate to the term “Messiah”. They were actually waiting for the Messiah, but unfortunately wouldn’t acknowledge Jesus to be that Messiah.

You even find the words “Son of Man” mentioned in the Old Testament pointing to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ in Daniel.

Daniel 7:13-14:
13“I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
14Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.

“Coming with the clouds” is repeated in the Book of Revelation:

Revelation 1:7:
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Who is coming with the clouds? The ONE like the Son of Man. We know that is the Lord Jesus Christ!

We know that Jesus was born of a woman, a human being, meaning that at the same time Jesus was the Son of Man, the son of a human being.

Luke 1:26-38
26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, on page 1518 in the second paragraph, describes Son of Man as follows: “In the Gospels, but especially in John, “Son of Man” means humanity and humiliation, but “Son of Man” also means exaltation and glory.”

Studying the Scriptures we find many places throughout the New Testament where Jesus refers to Himself as Son of Man:

In Matthew 16:13-17 Jesus asks his disciples “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” The final answer is: He is the Christ!

Matthew 16:13-17:
13When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

Luke 6:5:
And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.” (see also Matthew 12:8)

Luke 9:26:
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.

Luke 12:8-10:
8“Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
10“And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven. (see also Matthew 12:32)

Luke 12:40:
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Luke 17:22-30:
22Then He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23And they will say to you, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

I will close today with a quote from Saint Augustine:
“The Son of God became the Son of Man that you who were sons of men might be made sons of God.”

Who do you say the Son of Man is?
