Revelation 4:6-7
“Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the
midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of
eyes in front and in back. The first
living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the
third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was
like a flying eagle.“
Today we want to continue with verse 7.
According to William MacDonald “the four living creatures seem to be a combination of the cherubim in Ezekiel 10 and the seraphim in Isaiah 6.”
Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old & New Testament Words by W.E. Vine (page 177) describes the Cherubim as being “of one piece at the two ends of the golden lid on the Ark of the covenant inside the Holy of Holies. This signifies that the redeemed and glorified creatures were bound up with the sacrifice of Christ. Being in union with Christ then proceeds out of the Mercy Seat.”
What’s a description of the Cherubim and Seraphim?
They are created beings just as we humans are created beings. Therefore, angels are not from eternity past nor are they, or we, omniscient as is our God. We humans are like the angels bound up with the sacrifice of Christ. The function of the redeemed cherubim, seraphim, and humans is depicted as being in fellowship with God as well as being there for serving Him. The cherubim (cherubim is plural, with the letter im at the end, cherub is singular) compared to the seraphim are much the same except for primary duties. The cherubim are primarily guards, or attendants, “attached” – “united” – to God’s throne (Exodus 25:18-19), whereas the seraphim flew above and around (Isaiah 6:2-7) to attend God’s throne and offer praises to Him. God’s angelic court serves as an example to each believer: As redeemed created beings who are eternally thankful for being united with our Savior—in Him and Him in us—our primary purpose in our life now and eternal is to serve and worship God.
