The Twelfth Apostle – Part 5
Whose Name will be on the Twelfth Foundation of New Jerusalem’s City Wall?
Paul’s miracles in Acts demonstrate his apostolic authority and fulfill Jesus’ promise of Holy Spirit power to His chosen witnesses. So, in Part 5 we are looking at the miracles Paul performed.
Paul Preached and Wrote
Paul not only preached the Gospel Message, but also wrote it in Epistles that have gone around the globe and are present today. For example:
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you first of all the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. [some may have tasted the Spirit, but spit it out and did not absorb the indwelling Holy Spirit]
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (Isaiah 53:12; Daniel 9:26) 4and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
Obedient to the Lord’s Command
Paul was fulfilling and being obedient to the responsibilities of the Lord’s command:
Mark 16:14-15 14Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
Where and What?
During Paul’s third journey (Acts 27), he was shipwrecked on the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.
What Malta’s Miracles Teach Us About God’s Protection
The ship was battered (stern being broken by violence of the waves), sinking with cargo and two hundred and seventy-six persons, including Paul.
Acts 28:1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. (NIV)
What Happened on Malta After Paul’s Shipwreck?
Acts 28:3-6 Paul gathered a pile of brush wood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper [serpent], driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects [harm]. (Mark 16:18) 6The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god. (NIV)
Acts 28:8-9 And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him. 9So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed. (Mark 16:18)
When and How?
When was Saul known to be Paul?
Soon after the believers were first called Christians at Antioch in Northern Phoenicia near the Syrian border, Saul became known as Paul in Acts 13:9;
How could Paul have such power to cause a man to go blind?
Scripture below tells us how: He was filled with the Holy Spirit in the same way as the other eleven whom Jesus had chosen. The Lord Jesus said:
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Paul exerting his power:
Why Paul’s Power Made a Roman Governor Believe
Acts 13:8-12 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul [provincial governor] away from the faith. 9Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10and said, “O full of deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? 11And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time,” And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12Then proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
The Cripple Who Leaped After Hearing Paul Speak
Acts 14:8-11 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10said with a loud voice, “Stand up on your feet!” And he leaped and walked. 11Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”
The Slave Girl Who Couldn’t Stop Following Paul
Acts 16:16-18 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit [demon], “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out that very hour.” (See Mark 16:17)
What Happened When Paul’s Handkerchief Healed the Sick?
Acts 19:11-12 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. (See Mark 16:16-17)
Why a Dead Man Came Back to Life During Paul’s Sermon?
Acts 20:9-10 And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.”
