What is Revealed about the Lord Jesus Christ in the Book of Revelation?

(Part 1 of 2)

The title of the last Book in the Holy Bible, The Revelation of Jesus Christ, is certainly appropriate because He is definitely unveiled. The Book consists of 22 chapters, revealing that the Lord Jesus Christ is Almighty Jehovah God, spiritually equal to the Father and the Holy Spirit. Authoritatively, Christ the Son obeys every command of the Father, and the Spirit obeys both the Father and the Son. But, as for the Church and for the coming Millennial kingdom on earth, the Father gives to His Son the throne and authority to judge and reign.

Author and Writer

The first chapter of the Book tells us to whom it is written, and from Whom it comes:

Revelation 1:4-6
John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

We learn from the first chapter that the greetings are from John and the Savior to the seven churches. Although the churches are named, the very words of the Head of the Church—the Lord Jesus Christ—should be heeded with all somberness by all local churches today: “hear what the Spirit says to the churches”. Even though John is the writer, the Lord Jesus Christ is the Author of The Book of Revelation. The first chapter makes clear that Jesus Christ is the first to be resurrected from the dead and remain alive forever.

Alpha and Omega

The Book of Revelation reveals that the Lord Jesus Christ is Almighty Jehovah God in the following verses: Revelation 1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7, 14; 19:15; 21:22.

Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

The Alpha and the Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Jesus Christ is the equal Almighty God with the Father (Revelation 15:3; 16:7; 19:15, 19:11). The Lord Jesus Christ is referred to as the great I AM when referred to in John 8:58 with Exodus 3:14, and YHWH, (Jehovah in NKJV margin of Exodus 6:3). See also Isaiah 41:4; Isaiah 48:12.

Triune Almighty God

The following verse strongly points to the three Persons of God all being the Triune Almighty God, of Whom the Lord Jesus is within:

Revelation 4:8b
“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

We know that the Lord Jesus Christ is the One who is to come!

In Revelation 4:8 it is the second time that the Lord Jesus Christ is declared to be Almighty God (the first mention was in Revelation 1:8).

Revelation 11:17b
“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was and who is to come, because You have taken Your great power and reigned.”

This is the third of eight times in this last Book of the Bible that He is recognized as being Almighty God.

Revelation 16:7
And I [John] heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.”

The Lord Jesus is for the fifth time referred to as Lord God Almighty.

Revelation 19:15
Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

In verse 15 the Lord Jesus Christ is pointed out to be Almighty God for the seventh time in this Book. Why should He strike the nations? Because of their wickedness and offenses!

The Godhead

The words of the following verse fully express the co-equal union of the Father and Son in the Godhead of Almighty God:

Revelation 21:22
But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

Here “it” is talking about the new city of Jerusalem from heaven (verse 10). The King James Study Bible by Thomas Nelson comments:

“No temple is necessary since both the Father and the Son will be present and revealed in their fullest.”

Creator

We also learn from The Book of Revelation that the Lord Jesus is our Creator:

Revelation 4:11
“You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”

God has the right to rule and the sovereign authority to judge the earth, because He is both holy and the Creator of all (Colossians 1:17: “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” Jesus Christ is the Creator).

Worthy

Only the Lord Jesus is worthy to open the seals that give warnings of coming judgment:

Revelation 5:9b
“You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”

We will continue and finish our short overview in two weeks.

Thank you for reading and God bless you!
